Updated : Thursday, 25 January 2007

Each Australia Day an Australian of the Year is announced .

Whilst in no way detracting from these honours , we have decided to make two additional awards :

HONORARY AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR and AUSTRALIANS OF THE YEAR .

2007

HONORARY AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR

Major Michael Mori , USMC

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing .

The people never give up their liberties but under some delusion .

............. Edmund Burke

Major Mori is a US Marine Corps officer and lawyer who , seemingly by accident , has been given the task of defending David Hicks at Guantanamo Bay . Major Mori was not a specialist in international law , but has gone way beyond what many would have to defend his client . He seems to be oblivious to the possible effects on his future service career . He simply wants a " fare go " for his client , even when David Hick's government has deserted him . Australians prize the " fare go " above most other things , for this reason Michael Mori is now an Honorary Australian .

AUSTRALIANS OF THE YEAR

Sisters of Charity

A group of Roman Catholic Nuns who have , inter alia , have run St Vincent's Hospital Sydney for over 150 years . St Vincent's is arguably the " best " hospital in the country and " world class " in many specialities . It is where Prime Ministers are sometimes treated , but more importantly , all comers are cared for in the same fashion , even Protestants !
