2007 AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL ELECTIONS

NOTE : AS NO FUNDING FOR THIS PAGE HAS BEEN FORTHCOMING , WE HAVE HAD LITTLE CHOICE BUT TO ONLY MONITOR THIS ELECTION .

We believe that the Government will loose , not only because of the usual reason of " Governments loosing elections , rather than Oppositions winning them " but also that the electors are attracted to the Opposition Leader , as shown by to infamous Channel Nine Worm .

Why ? There are many answers , but most start with " We do not like lies " .

We look forward to the Opposition Leader honouring his promises and also resisting the migration of assorted  " advisors " to the N.S.W. State Government to Canberra , PLEASE do not let them do to the country what they have done to this State .

GODSPEED  and GOOD RIDDANCE !

As reality seems to follow fiction and we are sure that a lack of humour here will lead to insanity , we would suggest purchasing a DVD or two beforehand :

While not quite on the point , the following quotation could be modified to suit if the Liberal Party dumps John Howard before the election :

" I am told that the current joke going round the House is that it is the first time in recorded history that turkeys have been known to vote for an early Christmas. "

.................................... James_Callaghan

We are not going to cover all aspects of the election , but will be doing a sort of running commentary from a small " l " Liberal tending towards Labor viewpoint .

Unlike in the US , " dirt files " do not work particularly well in Australia and we are not interested in who is sleeping with who or what . The exception will be when hypercritical attacks are made or when outrageous statements are made or " floated " . Examples of this are the The Heffernan scandal , where ( on another of our sites ) we came down on Heffernan like the proverbial " ton of bricks " from the beginning . Another recent example was the " leaking " that Kevin Rudd had had a heart operation , the fact that this was some years ago and that he had walked the Kokoda Track last year was overlooked . Australian media has a lot to answer for in this area .

ISSUES

SPECIFIC ISSUES

These are just a few , of many , issues which require a change in government policy . Some , if not all , involve the States and require strong ( and possibly ruthless ) federal resolve to put right .

ENVIRONMENT

SALINITY , WATER USAGE , LOGGING AND WOOD CHIPPING ( ESP. OLD GROWTH FORESTS ) , CARBON EMISSIONS , TRANSPORT  and SUPPORT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT INTERNATIONALLY .
( Climate Change )

HUMAN RIGHTS

SUPPORT OF THE UNITED NATIONS , SAFETY NET FOR ALL AUSTRALIANS , DETENTION CENTRES , ABORIGINAL RECONCILIATION .

GENERAL

A CLEAR AIM IN FOREIGN AFFAIRS , DEFENCE AND TRADE AND THE ABILITY TO FORCEFULLY COMBINE THESE AREAS OVERSEAS WHEN IN THE NATIONAL INTEREST .

A CONSISTENT EVALUATION OF PROPOSED FOREIGN INVESTMENT  , HAVING PROPER REGARD TO THE NATIONAL INTEREST .

PROMOTION OF A CLEAN GREEN IMAGE OVERSEAS FOR RURAL PRODUCTS .

SUPPORT OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT . THE RESTORATION OF FULL RESEARCH FUNDING TO UNIVERSITIES AND THE CSIRO .

SUPPORT OF INFRASTRUCTURE IN RURAL AREAS .

ADEQUATE FUNDING OF THE ABOVE AND HEALTH , EDUCATION AND DEFENCE .

SUPPORT OF FREE SPEECH , DIVERSITY OF MEDIA OWNERSHIP AND PUBLIC BROADCASTING . ADEQUATE FUNDING OF THE ABC AND SBS .

THE IMMEDIATE REVERSAL OF THE DIGITAL TELEVISION DECISION .

THE FULL DISCLOSURE OF ANY " MORAL AGENDA " PRIOR TO THE NEXT ELECTION .

ADEQUATE REGULATION OF THE BANKING INDUSTRY .

Even if we do say it ourselves , the above is not a bad summary , too bad that it was written about the LAST ELECTION , three years ago ! Now , one is tempted to ask how many conversions on the Road to Damascus may a Government have in one election ?

SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER :

( These will be put into a logical order later , but do throw some light on why the present Government does have some problems , particularly when viewed in the knowledge of a $20,000,000,000 surplus and the patchy way it is likely to be promised / spent in this election .

THE LEADERS

JOHN HOWARD

A Machiavellian genius at winning elections , with an instinctive feel for the issues , although he has recently had a few slip ups . To use a Cricket analogy , watching Howard at work in the period before an election is like watching Shane Warne working over a batsman with subtle variations in delivery until he has them out , it may take a few or hundreds of balls. In Howard's case , he keeps putting issues out until something bites , say the GST ( Good Ship Tampa ) .  SWAG about John Howard would indicate a Napoleonic leaning , an ability to play with the truth ( core / non - core promises - he does not lie , but his words have to be studied very closely ) and a possibility that he was more gravely affected by the 9/11 attacks than publicly acknowledged ( he was in Washington , DC on the day ) . His intellect may be limited , he does seem to have a problem with complex issues , such as Climate Change and also with dealing with clearly brighter minds . This last " Guess " may explain why we have had so many Ministerial duds in Australia .
